Spotlight on Sustainability: Tiny Trees Neighborhood Initiative

We may be biased, but this month we're highlighting ourselves because we think we are being pretty sustainable. This past month, we continued our progress on the Tiny Trees Neighborhood Initiative in partnership with the City of Des Moines and with a grant from Microsoft's Community Empowerment Fund! The first resident to receive a Tiny Tree as a part of this initiative is pictured below!

Who wouldn't love increasing the urban tree canopy, reducing urban heat in the summer months, sequestering carbon dioxide, and improving air quality and greenery for residents? If you are interested in helping, sign up for one of the three aspects of this initiative described below:

  1. Site Analysis: Deciding the location of the tree to ensure space for growth

  2. Planting: Doing the dirty work of getting the tree into the ground

  3. Maintenance: Ensuring the tree has enough water, protection, and is upright so it can grow to be the best tree ever!

Any questions, contact Zack Valigosky.

Spotlight on Sustainability: Landmatters

Spotlight on Sustainability: Landmatters

If you only take three things from this, here’s what I want you to know:

1. I strive for exceptional landscapes that artfully integrate people and the environment.
2. When you work with Landmatters you're not only talking to a "landscaper" but someone whose work is their passion.
3. Yesterday was best but now is still a great time for you to take a look and start thinking. How do you and your landscape work together? What statement does it or could it make about your impact on the planet?

Spotlight on Sustainability: Faaborg Farm

Spotlight on Sustainability: Faaborg Farm

Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa, sustainability was not a hot topic of conversation. However, things are changing. Around the world, we can find innovative solutions for water collection in Bermuda, a never-ending vista of wind turbines in Germany, solar panels on nearly every house in Australia, and so much more in the push for renewables and sustainability. I wanted to bring this push home to the farm.

Iowa Prairie Heritage Week

Iowa Prairie Heritage Week

If you’re an Iowan (lifelong or transplant) you probably know that our state is a prairie state. You might even be able to identify a Black-eyed Susan or Big Bluestem when you see a prairie planting. Or maybe you enjoy tallgrass prairie flowers, but couldn’t name a single one if you tried. Wherever you are in your journey of learning about Iowa’s native prairies, Iowa Prairie Heritage Week is the perfect time to learn a little more. The celebration begins on September 11 and goes through September 17. Who knows--maybe you’ll spark a love for the prairie that will last all year!
